chinese provinces
The names of the chinese provinces seems to be very difficult.
However, once you know the meaning of the place names, you find out that most Chinese provinces are named along with location, e.g. to the north or south of a mountain or a river.
Within the 23 provinces in China, many of their names are chosen according to the area’s position relative to a geographical location such as a large and hence important river.
The words used in the names of Chinese Provinces can be categorized as follows:
•Geographical :“river” (he, jiang and chuang), “mountain” (shan), “sea” (hai), “lake” (hu)
•Directions: “north” (bei), “south” (nan), “east” (dong), “west” (xi).
•Common auspicious words: “Tranquil/peaceful” (ning/an), auspicious (ji), “fortune” (fu)
•Colors: “black” (hei), “green” (qing)
•Natural phenomenon: “cloud” (yun)
•Mythical creature: “dragon” (long)
Then you can easily deduct He Bei ( River North) - means to the north of the yellow river, and He Nan - to the south of the yellow river.
And Hu Nan is then the south of the Dong Ting Hu (Lake)
Regarding Cities, the most famous city Beijing means the north capital. Jing means capital. And in the south yuo have Nanjing
