guillin

 1 mei is een dag vrij in China. de meeste chinezen proberen er een lang weekend van te maken. wij ook. deze week zijn we naar een van de meest toeristische trekpleisters van china getrokken ; Guillin. er zijn bussen, treinen en vliegtuigen naar Guillin maar Mr P vond het geen probleem om er ons naar toe te rijden. op de kaart lijkt dat niet zo ver maar je bent toch al gauw 15h onderweg naar Guillin.
wij hebben een eerste tussenstop gemaakt in zhaoqing. Eigenlijk wouden we het oude stadscentrum bezoeken. Mr P wist de weg , zei hij. altijd gevaarlijk als hij dat zegt. Hij bracht ons niet naar het centrum maar naar een soort park. hier kon je de seven peaks from the qixing yan park zien.  de pieken liggen in een waterlandschap. je kan de bergen beklimmen. De eerste hebben we wel beklommen maar de andere hebben we vanop de grond bewonderd. Mr P heeft 3 keer moeten uitrusten vooraleer hij de berg op was ( ertussen dacht ik dat hij een hartinfarct zou krijgen).  het park was mooi maar we wouden toch liever ook eens naar die oude stadsmuren en het oude centrum gaan. welk oud stadscentrum ? de stadsmuren waren wel mooi maar het oude centrum bleek non existing. dus al bij al een geluk dat Mr P ons naar de 7 peaks gebracht had.
vandaaruit zijn we richting Yanshou getrokken om te genieten van het prachtige landschap. Een boottochtje op de li rivier doe je best vanuit xingping. Het stadje is er niet te toeristisch en de boottochtjes niet zo duur als in Guillin of in Yangshuo. Nu we een tijdje in china wonen, hebben we het ons zelf geriskeerd om een chambre d'hotes hier te doen. Ook een belevenis op zich. Je moet alles positief bekijken : het onthaal was super ( kindjes hebben yoghurtjes, chips gekregen), na de boottocht een verse pomelo, ze hadden speciaal voor ons verse broodjes gehaald voor het ontbijt, spotgoedkoop. Maar er waren ook wel wat nadelen. de bedden waren niet echt van super kwaliteit. J en Seth sliepen nog wel in een bed, maar jinthe en ik sliepen op dunne matrassen op een verhoogd stuk grond. de douche en de toilet was 1 geheel. en het rook er ook een beetje raar.... Zelfs Mr P , als chinees, verkoos toch liever de hotels die mijn man uitzocht dan de chambre d'hotes die ik voorstelde.
Van mr P gesproken,... die was in de wolken. betaald worden en op reis kunnen gaan... Soms deed hij denken aan een kind; bv tijdens de boottocht liep hij van voor naar achter en van achter naar voor om fotos te maken. ( overenthousiast) omdat hij s avonds niet moest rijden, kon hij ook een glas alcohol meedrinken ( waaronder zijn eerste glas Duits bier ). Hij deed enorm zijn best om mee te kunnen doen met mijn echtgenoot ( en ook om hem ervan te overtuigen dat hij goed was om mee te gaan. mijn echtgenoot blijft in zijn ogen 'the big chief') voor de kinderen heeft hij elk een tasje gekocht als aandenken aan yangshuo. Mij heeft hij een benen kam gekocht.  
De regio is vooral op chinese toeristen ingesteld en dat merk je wel. Bv de belichting is de rietfluitengrot van guillin is net iets te kitsch naar europese smaak. de volgeende stop was shangri-la yanshou. in europese pretparken kan je meestal met een bootje door een poppendorp varen waarin popjes 'dansen'. hier heb je min of meer hetzelfde maar dan met echte mensen ipv popjes. als je met je bootje passeert, beginnen ze te dansen of hun show op te voeren. de chinezen waren er gek van.
als afsluiter zijn we naar een oud dorpje geweest. (waarvan ik de naam enkel in karakters heb) jammer genoeg moest je hier vrij veel ingangsgeld voor betalen. Voor ons had het wel iets charmants maar mr P vond het maar niks. Ik vermoed dat hij ooit opgegroeid is tussen zulke huizen. huizen die nu afgebroken zijn voor moderne appartementen. waarom dan betalen om die oude huizen te zien ? Hij had wel gelijk dat het iets te duur was. Toen we ook nog eens bij het buitenrijden van de parking voor de parking moesten betalen, sprong hij bijna uit zijn vel. time to go home
Conclusie : ik heb van onze kleine week regio Guillin genoten...

 1 May is a holiday day. most Chinese try a long weekend of it. we too. This week we went one of the most popular destinations in china ; Guillin. there are buses, trains and planes to Guillin but Mr. P was willing to drive us there. on the map it does not seem that far away but it takes easily 15h driving to Guillin.
we had a first stop in Zhaoqing. Actually we wanted to visit the old city center. Mr P said that he knew the way. always dangerous when he says that. He brought us not to the city center but to a kind of park. here we could see the seven peaks from the Qixing yan. you can climb the peaks. we climb the first top but the other peaks we have admired from the ground. Mr P has to rest 3 times before he was on top of the mountain (in between I thought he would get a heart attack). The park was nice but we prefered also to visit the old city walls and the old town. an old city center? the city walls were nice but the old center was non existing. So after all a blessing to us that Mr P had brought the 7 peaks.
hence we headed towards Yanshou to enjoy the beautiful scenery. For a boat trip on the Li River you go better to Xingping. The town is not too touristical and to rent a boat is not as expensive as in Guillin or in Yangshuo. Now we live already for some time in china, we took the risk to sleep in a chambre d'hotes. Also an experience in itself. I prefer to look at it in a positive way: the reception was great (yoghurts for the kids , chips) after the boattrip a fresh pomelo,very cheap and they had brought us fresh bread for breakfast. But there were also some disadvantages. the beds were not really super quality. J and seth still slept in a bed but jinthe and I slept on thin mattresses ( no bed at all). the shower and the toilet was 1 piece together. and it smelled a little weird .... Even Mr. P, and he is Chinese, prefered the hotels my husband choose then the chambre d'hotes that I suggested.
About Mr P ... who was in the heaven. during our journey he was paid and he was able to travel ... Sometimes he was like a child, eg, during the boottrip he ran from front to back and from back to front to take pictures. (Excited about everything) Because in the evening he didn't had to drive, he could drink some alcohol with us (including his first German beer). He did his very best to be able to get equal with my husband (and to convince him that it was a good idea to take him with us to travel. My husband remains in his eyes "the big chief '). he bought for the children a bag each as a memory of Yangshuo. For me he bought a bone comb.
The region is orientated to Chinese tourists and that is something you notice. Eg the exposition in the reed flute cave of Guillin is a bit too kitsch to European taste.
The next stop is Shangri-la yanshou. when you take a boattrip in European theme parks, youll be sailing through a village where dolls 'dance'. here in yangshou you have more or less the same but with real people instead of dolls. if the boat passes, they begin to dance and perform their show. The Chinese were crazy about it.
Our last stop was an old village. (Whose name I've only in chinese characters). unfortunately we had to pay quite a lot of entrance. For us it was something charming but Mr. P did not like it. I think he grew up between such houses. The houses are now demolished for modern apartments. why to pay to see these old houses? He was right that it was too expensive. When we left the parking lot , we had to pay again for the parking, Mr P freaked out.  time to go home
Conclusion: I really enjoyed our week in the region of Guillin
