Xiamen, dat is eigenlijk een eiland en is, net als Shenzhen, een Speciale Economische Zone. Xiamen is rijk door Taiwanese investeringen. Het lokale dialect, bekend als minnanyu, is vrijwel identiek aan het dialect gesproken in Taiwan, en de dichtstbijzijnde Taiwanese-gecontroleerde eilanden - Matsu en Quemoy (Kinmen) - liggen slechts een paar kilometer  voor de kust van Xiamen .
Omdat Mr P geen paspoort heeft, konden we niet naar Kinmen. Dus we bleven op het eiland Xiamen. Ik vond het ingewikkeld om erachter te komen welke ticket ik moest kopen voor de ferry. Gelukkig las ik in de Lonely Planet een prijsindicatie (Mijn ticket kostte 8 RMB, maar je moest tickets van 148 en 265 RMB ook)
dus na enorme wachttijd om een parkeerplaats in de parkeergarage te krijgen, een rij een ticket kopen, een rij in een sas voor het instijgen op de boot. (Te veel chinese duwen, niet gaf me een goed gevoel.)
 Historisch gezien werd Xiamen opgericht als een belangrijke zeehaven in de Ming-dynastie. Xiamen was ook een onofficiële handel depot,  een bloeiende onder-de-toonbank bedrijf in zijde met de Portugese, Spaanse en Nederlandse, totdat een Britse zeemacht het bestormden na hun overwinning in de eerste Opium Oorlog in 1841. Er is bewijs vandaag van haar rol als internationale nederzetting in de overlevende koloniale architectuur.
Xiamen; het zou kunnen zijn zo mooi, maar de Chinese vernietigde het met hun massatoerisme, overweldigend winkels met flitsende uithangborden.
nog de tip van mijn reisgidsen: hier altijd vragen naar de prijs voor je je eten bestelt. Het is duur hier in de buurt. (10 keer meer dan op andere plaatsen). We hieldhet op fruit en brood vandaag.

So we stayed on the island Xiamen. I found it quiet complicated to figure out which ticket I needed to by for the ferry. Luckely I read in the lonely planet a price indication so I could guess the ticket I had to buy ( My ticket costed 8 RMB , but you had tickets from 148 and 265 RMB too)
so after huge queuing to get a parking spot in the undergrond parking, queuing to buy the ticket, queuing into a sas for getting on the boat. ( too many chinese pushing , didn't gave me a good feeling.)
If also got the tip from my travel guides : always ask the price here before you order your diner. It is overpriced around here. ( 10 times more then at other places). we sticked to fruits and bread today.

There is evidence today of its role as an international settlement in the surviving colonial architecture.
it could be so beautiful but the chinese distroyed it with their mass tourism, overwelming shops with flashy signs.
